SALMON RIVER
Under Section 10.2[g] NYCRR which designates special regulations for the Catch & Release Flyfishing Only Areas on the Salmon River, the Lower Flyfishing Area from the County Route 52 Bridge upstream to the marked boundary at Beaverdam Brook will be closed until Monday October 15th, 2007.

As the salmon and steelhead season approach one must be aware of the 2008 NYSDEC regulations. Provided here for your convenience are highlights of the regulations which we have found to be the most commonly asked questions.

From August 15th through April 14th of the following year, the following regulations shall apply:

  1.  Hooks shall not have a gap (distance between the shank and the point) greater than one-half inch.
  2. Use of hooks with added weight is prohibited, except that artificial flies with no more than one-eighth ounce added weight are permitted. For the purpose of this paragraph, the method by which weight is added to a hook does not affect classification of the hook as an artificial fly, provided the hook otherwise meets the definition of an artificial fly in section 19.1(c) of this Title.
  3. Weight shall not be added to the line, leader, swivels, artificial fly or lure in any manner such that the weight hangs lower than the attached hook, artificial fly or lure when the line or leader is suspended vertically from the rod, except from Lake Ontario upstream to the Route 3 bridge from April 1st through August 14th.
  4. The distance between the hook, artificial fly or lure and any weight attached to the line or leader, whether fixed or sliding, shall not exceed four feet.
  5. Fish from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise.
  6.  Use of more than one hook is prohibited.
  7. Additional special fishing regulations for the Salmon River, Oswego County, from County Route 52 bridge upstream to Lighthouse Hill Reservoir. No person may fish at any time except from   County Route 52 bridge in Altmar upstream to a marked boundary at Beaverdam Brook from September 15 through May 15.
THEREFORE OPENING DAY STEELHEAD IN THIS AREA IS SEPTEMBER 15th - mark your calender

GET UNLEADED FOR A BETTER TRIP

There has been quite a bit of discussion regarding the use of lead as a method to bring the artificial fly to the targeted species of fish.

For the convenience, we have excerpted the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation fishing regulations, which specifically addresses these issues.
