Housatonic River 04/19/23

Posted by Jack Wilkinson

Took a drive out to the Housatonic the last couple nights to have a look at the water and fish for an hour. The water is perfect, running at 944 CFS in Falls Village and 1370 CFS at Bulls Bridge in Gaylordsville this morning. The fish were not prevalent but we got into a few and managed to get a nice holdover on a Stonefly. The bugs were active, saw a few blue winged olives, black and brown Stoneflies, and a few Caddis were around. Took 20 minutes at dusk to sit and observe a flat look for some risers and spotted a handful. With the weather being so hot the last few days the river temp has shot up and was in the low 60s but now that we've got our snap into something a little more normal and have reasonable spring temperatures the river will be more active. Flies to use are scuds, Stoneflies, Pheasant tails, Prince nymphs, stripping a woolly bugger through slower moving water has been a very effective technique. We've been waiting for the water to hit under 1000 CFS so its safe to wade now that we have hit our requirements to time to get out there again!
